While private armies are not encouraged for those without land holdings, even the grumpiest of kings knows that all sorts of people need to protect their homes, money, goods and person.  So there are a number of possibilities that will allow you to develop your own defensive capability.   Like all things, they need permission from the local authorities but, if you are in good standing that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
