The Broken Sabre
The Broken Sabre is a rundown light sailing ship, pressed into service as a sloop-of-war. While she has served as a merchantman in the past, her last ‘role’ was as an armed smuggler along the Galinia coast. Eventually the vessel was identified, the owner/captain was arrested in Angasa, and the ship impounded. After a legal battle, Broken Sabre was confiscated although there was no owner of the vessel, as the offences had taken place in both Angasan and Galinian waters. However, the leaders of those two states (cousins with a shared interest) reached a compromise, equipped it with a basic crew, and dispatched it to serve as a military vessel for another relative, Lady Tara Briganda-Shay – the Governor of Finaroka. She isn’t really a military ship, more like an armed privateer – although she is classed as a Sloop-of-War in the Angasan navy.
Description
The Broken Sabre is armed with four light ballistae and one heavy ballista, and a small military contingent of 5x marines (Ftr-2, Artillerists) and 5x Imperial Rowers (Commoner/Warrior). The team work the ballistae and then lead the attack. The marine sergeant commands the unit, while the Rowers have been assigned to the vessel by Commodore Yarbro, to act as support for the Marines. The crew are eve n more disparate, with a mix of Deckhands (Expert/Commoner), Sailors (Expert-2), Shipmates (Expert/Warrior) and Buccaneers (Ftr-1) https://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/npc-s/npcs-cr-0/human-pirate-buccaneer/
The ship’s captain, and his officers, don’t add to the ‘military’ feeling either. This is Lieutenant Simpson’s first command, having had experience as a watch officer on privateer vessel, working out of the Razardi Isles – he brought one of his colleagues (a bard) along with his as a watch officer. The other watch officer is a, more sombre minded, cleric, assigned by Commodore Yarboro to help balance the captain’s gung-ho attitude.
The Broken Sabre is renowned for carrying out raids and bringing in small prize vessels, for disposal by the prize courts in Finaroka.
