These are the people appointed to represent a Lord's authority in an area. They act as their Lord's Representative, oversee the local watchmen and military, keep the peace, enforce the law and make sure taxes are collected. If you are a Lord who controls more that two or more separate estates you will need to appoint administrators to help you look after them (You can only be the management figure for one at a time). Your administrator may well be an officer in your mil…

An Imperial ruler rules over other Kings, Queens and Sovereign monarchs. In some cases the Soveriegn nation just pays a small tax, in other cases the Emperor rules directly. In some cases the Emperor makes no real demands on a state. However, there is normally a demand to adhere to a basic set of rules, laws and defensive pact. There is no recogni…

Marriage

Marriage rarely happens to PCs in fantasy games, mainly because they are always off doing stuff - and then, when the PCs retire, their players forget about them and move on. In all of my 35 years playing, I can remember half a dozen in-game ‘marriages’ - sure, there have been a few ‘liaisons’ between characters or between characters and NPCs, but they are rarely played beyond a very basic level. Although that, perhaps, may be a good thing :}

Introduction

I was fortunate enough to be invited to help the Imperial Navy consider what types of preserved foods would be best for use aboard their vessels. Much of the work was done on Holy Isle, where I was able to access their libraries, for research purposes, to complement my own knowledge on the subject. For much of the time, I had a junior Lieutenant assigned to me, with the intent of smoothing my interactions with military officers and the various diplomats wh…

Orders

There are a number of different types of Order, although they all follow this pattern, as far as they are able.

	* Chivalric Orders - Such as the Brevic Order or the Eagle Knights – owe their loyalty to a Country or its Ruler. It is generally accepted that a Chivalric Order should have a Sovereign Lord as its Patron. These are based on a number of RL Orders of Chivalry that were prevalent in Europe.

This is all very basic, but it does give us a structure to work with. However, I suspect that Thieves Guilds and Wizard Societies would follow a similar pattern.

Academic Establishments are all about teaching things. Heads of Universities and Academies don’t have to be Master level teachers – although many are.

Ranks and Titles

A basic analysis of different ranks and titles - and a rough comparison of status and influence. However, there can be quite a lot of variation. Some people might have more than one title and may accumulate the 'status' from each. Others might just have a larger than normal army at their command or have cornered the market in an important commodity. The table is a guideline rather than absolute.

First things First - This isn’t meant to constrain PCs - rather it talks about the structures I use to make sense of religious organisations and allows me to compare them to other titles and ranks. If you want to build a different type of religious hierarchy in one of my games - cool. Just include me, so I can make sure it fits with everything else.
