+Forest gardens are clearing that have been cultivated to  produce more of the forest plants that are edible by humans, and make it easier to get a subsistence living out of a forest environment.  No Forest Gardener is ever going to be wealthy; however, they can build something from scratch and make an independent living.

+Starting with a forest or woodland clearing, transplant native berry, nut and other fruit bearing bushes from the local woods and ed into the borders, to create a hedge that both marks the property out and supplies some of the food the Gardener needs to survive.  The central area is cleared and used for more conventional crops (perhaps Peas, Beans and Onions).  Outside the hedge, other edible woodland plants, such as Sweet Violet and Lignan Sorrel, are encouraged.  While that won’t keep a family through the year, it will go some way to provide minimum rations. Get chickens to keep down pests and give eggs as protein, get a hive of bees to make you honey and pollinate and it starts looking better.  A shack, or two, for accommodation.  The clearing just needs to be found, and both types of building can be constructed by hand, with minimal building skills and cost.  If you are prepared to put the effort in, it is free.

If you can, transplant some closer to home, but don’t deplete the originals.  DC10 survival gets you supplements for your diet.  It also lets you spot the oak trees – oak galls can be  sold for cash  (they are used to make ink), acorns need some work (you must leach the Tannins)  but can be ground and used to thicken soups and stews or even to add to flour when you are making bread.  That same DC10 survival check might also get you a rabbit, or some other small game.

+Craft is another skill that you can use untrained.  OK, you can only make the simplest things, and they won’t work every time – but here are some simple craft skills  (They have an end product) that you can make reasonably consistently.  Honey and Berries, and a sour-dough starter, lets you make a simple (if weak) country wine.  (you only actually need the honey to keep the starter going).  Pickle some fruit in it, and you have dessert that will store for a while and supply a glass of wine for afters -  Just right for midwinter.  Salt, and perhaps the sourdough starter, will let you to ‘ferment’  leaves - think Kimchi or Sauerkraut style – into a condiment that will last the winter.  Then there is the Acorn flour along with the more conventional vegetables  (which all crop in autumn, and then store over winter) which makes the whole project feasible.
-**Autumn** – Crab apples, Gooseberries and Forest potato are all harvested in the autumn.  Often Nuts can be collected from any Beech, Hazel or Chestnut trees that grow along the edges of the garden.

The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, other insects and self.  The plant is self-fertile.
-Fruit – can be eaten raw or cooked. Acid slightly tasting even when ripe.  The fruit is sometimes harvested before it is fully ripe and then cooked. The fruit is about 10mm in diameter. Young leaves and unripe fruits are used to make a sauce.
+An established family of Forest Gardeners should be able to hit the Poor Standard of living, so long as they use regular Survival rolls to add to foraged food to their diet, and Craft rolls for food preservation and the production of minor trade goods.

-A decidious Tree growing to 10 m (32ft 10in).. It is in flower in May, and the seeds ripen from Sep to October. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. It is noted for attracting wildlife.
-Fruit -  can be eaten raw or cooked But primarily used for jellies, preserves, cider and juices. The flavour is  harsh and acidic but improves considerably if the fruit is not harvested until it has been frosted.  The fruit is quite variable in size (it is about 2 - 4cm in diameter) and quality.  The fruit is rich in pectin and can be used in helping other fruits to set when making jam. A very pleasant tea can be made from the leaves.
-**Apios Vine**
-A perennial climber, growing to 1.2 m (4ft).  It is in leaf 11-Apr and in flower from Jun to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. It can fix Nitrogen.
-Tuber – Known as Forest Potato – can be eaten raw or cooked. Roast or Boil.  The tubers can be harvested in their first year but they take 2 – 3 years to become a sizeable crop. They can be harvested at any time of the year but are at their best in the autumn. The tubers can also be harvested in the autumn and will store until at least the spring:
-Seed – Known as Forest Pea –can be eaten cooked. Rather small and not produced very freely, they are used like peas and beans. Young seedpods can be eaten whole like mange toute.
-**Lingan Sorrel**
-A perennial growing to 0.6 m (2ft) by 0.3 m (1ft in).   It is in leaf 12-Jan It is in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen from Jun to August. The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required) and are pollinated by Wind.
-Leaves – can be eaten raw or cooked. They make a thirst-quenching on their own, or can be added to salads, used as a potherb or pureed and used in soups. A delicious lemon-like flavour, liked by most people who try them, they can be rather overpowering in quantity and are more generally used as a flavouring in mixed salads. The leaves can also be dried for later use. The leaves can be available all through the winter, especially in mild weather or if a little protection is given to the plants.

-Young leaves and flower buds can be eaten raw or cooked.  Usually available all through the winter. The leaves have a very mild flavour, though they soon become quite tough as they grow older. They make a very good salad, their mild flavour enabling them to be used in bulk whilst other stronger-tasting leaves can then be added to give more flavour. When added to soup they thicken it in much the same way as okra. A tea can be made from the leaves.
+Living standards, especially to start with are going to be very low, perhaps three or four people on a 10x10 shack.  (I’ve slept 3 large adults in a 10x10 tent, with enough space for all our camping gear, so not impossible)
+Food, clothes shoes etc will be basic, but sufficient live through.  As more elements are added to the garden, more shacks built and the family become slightly more skilled, things ease off, and they should be able to hit ‘Poor’ fairly easily.
