====== Workers Homes and Businesses ======

===== Overview =====

This covers most of the NPCs that the PCs will come across. Just about every Level-1 NPC class NPC commoner fall into the 3-10 gp/month cost of living range - which equates to 1-3 sp/day. However, remember this section covers a range of different skills and incomes, in general terms, the lower the skill set, the lower the quality of the home, and the smaller the settlement, the lower the quality of the home.  The floor plans and descriptions are examples of houses at this standard, be inventive - if it suits you.

A skilled Warrior who lives in a Thorpe, might have the same (or lower) standard of living that an unskilled commoner who lives in a village.

===== Homes =====

Just places to live.  Residents of these homes need to make a living outside of work.  In many cases that will involve Survival and minor Craft skills, although they might also find employment with other business in the settlement.  While you are unlikely to find any sort of major business in a Thorp,   you //might// find one in a Hamlet -  although I would expect that to have a bespoke NPC, with a character sheet and backstory, running it.

| The **Hut** and **Shack** are simple buildings, known around the world, which appear just about everywhere from a city's favelas to the wildest countryside.  They can be larger, and hold more people, but I probably wouldn't go past 5x residents and the area of a common room.  They make reasonable accommodation, especially when there is a chance that your home will be destroyed, and you would have to rebuild. \\ \\ Most unskilled commoners are able to build a home of this type.| {{ :consolidated:campaignsystem:huts_amd_shacks_cropped.png?100 |}} |
| The **Creel Cottage** is a simple one-roomed house based on the PF Downtime Common Room.  NPCs on the 3gp/month standard of living are used to this sort of shared accommodation.  It is an open building, tall enough that a second story can be installed between the rafters and the thatch later.  While smaller than some, it is based on RL buildings: Saxon Long House; Creel Houses; and Black Houses. It has a fire pit in the middle, for cooking while one end is used as a living area and the other for storage.  There is no chimney, smoke filters away through the thatched roof.  It can have economic extentions added to the back of the  cottage to make it more viable.\\  \\  Once the frame is up, an unskilled commoner will be able to complete the build. | {{ :consolidated:campaignsystem:creel_cottage_cropped.png?200 |}} |
| **Workers Cottages** are more common close to the larger settlements.  You might find a pair, occasionally, in a Hamlet, but that is probably a sign that it expects to grow.  While it appears tiny by modern standards there are precedences for small two-roomed homes that accommodate a small working family.  Based in a lodging and a garden, split between two homes, Workers Cottages always come in pairs, and are a decent way for a richer character to invest in rented accommodation, they are often the home of skilled workers, with the home tied to as local business.  Cooking is done over a brazier, and there is a bit of privacy -  although not all that much. \\ \\  Needs input from a skilled builder to start with, but can be completed by unskilled commoners. | {{:consolidated:campaignsystem:workers_cottages_cropped.png?200 |}} |
| **Simple Cottages** are based on the PF Lodgings and can provide basic accommodation for up to ten people.  However, they also make homes for smaller families where the main bread winner is skilled Expert, Adept or Warrior.  This example has a couple of small bedrooms and a storage area, while the rest of the space is given over to a general living area. ===== Home Businesses =====

Home businesses are a way for NPCs to develop their homes.  It might take years, even generations, to develop something that provides a recognisable improvement in Living Standards, but small steps add up.

| **Add-ons** can be found in Thorps and Hamlets, as well as some larger settlements.  Lean-tos fit easily onto Creel Cottages and Simple Cottages, while the other could be added to any of the homes listed above. The full Market Garden add-on is more likely to be found in Villages, although growing Hamlets might have them as well.\\ \\ They can all be built (over time) by unskilled commoners, although all of them need some sort of investment to buy stock, plants, animals, tools etc. | {{ :consolidated:campaignsystem:economic_add-ons.png?200 |}} |
| **The Ale House** is a very basic Tavern.  A Creel Cottage that has been developed, and now features a bar, a kitchen, a few lavs and some bunks for the owners.  It opens first thing in the morning to sell breakfasts and take-away food, then stay open until the last customers go in the evening.  It doesn't have that much to offer; just simple stews and soups, accompanied by local ales and wine, but that is enough for the locals, and keeps the business ticking over.  The owner hopes more people will come, and they can add a common room, and the other elements needed to turn it into a proper Tavern. ===== Leaders =====

Every settlement needs leadership of some sort, be it the family setup of Gurdinford, the informal, but very recognised, leadership of Thorhilda Brightstone at the quarry or something more formal.

|This **Fortified Manor** can serve as a home for the leader of a small hinterland community, especially one close to the wilderness.  Based on the Creel Cottage, it has been upgraded and developed to support, up to, ten retainers as well as the leader and their family.  It still has simple down hearth cooking, but it also has proper lavs and a sauna for general use, as well as a private room for the leader.  Defensively it has a ten-foot-high palisade, with a guard room to keep an eye on the gate.  I would expect to find a couple warriors among the retainers, along with a couple of experts to help oversee the house and estate.  Even the commoners would be trained to some sort of weaponry. It will be home to a nature loving leader who is prepared to spend time with their retainers, perhaps a Ranger, Barbarian or low level Aristocrat. \\ \\ |{{ :consolidated:campaignsystem:small_fortified_manor_-with_decorations_-_cropped.png?200 |}} |
