Greenscar

Grenscar – (Currently Whitehold): (Small fortified town) Built around a mine, the town exports ingots of Copper, Lead and Spelter. The mine produces a small amount of Iron, which is turned into tools and weapons(at the smithy) before shipment to Westhaven – the provincial capital. There is a small state guard unit stationed here, and the local mine employs a few guards of their own. Most of the Copper is bound for the mint in Stilan. Lead and spelter are sold generally. There are a couple of small holdings, and an active foraging and hunting community, but that is mainly small game, and doesn’t lead to large scale leather or fur production.

Something like 25% of the population of Greenscar are dwarves, 60% Human, 10% Halfling and the rest made up of a scattering of other races.

The White Company

Greenscar is owned by the White Company - that doesn't mean to say they own everything for miles around, just that they own their offices, the mine, smelters and the rest of the land inside the palisade, the other businesses own their buildings and pay rent for the land. The White Company are allowed to tax the local population, in respect of public services and infrastructure, although they are limited in this, and can only charge taxes agreed by the Governor of The Western Province. The White Company are also responsible for claiming state tax, on the Governor's behalf.

White Company Mercenaries

The White Company are registered as a mercenary unit, as well as owning the land inside the palisade. Their mercenaries, often long term employees are generally employed in, and around, Greenscar, although they could be available for hire, in the right circumstances. There are, perhaps, ten mercenaries in all, so not a large force.

The Guard Tower

While the guard tower can accommodate ten people, there is generally a small unit of five guards stationed here, seconded from Westhaven. Each of the small holdings get a daily visit from a guard or two, and then they make a 'scouting' style sweep of the local countryside. Lightly armed, and armoured, they wear studded leather and carry a both short bow and hand axe, and are at home in the countryside. They don't generally have much to do inside the palisade, but support the mine guards, should it be required. They are seconded here from Westhaven, for a two or three month duty, then rotate back home.

The Mine and Metal Works

The mine mainly produces copper and lead, along with a small amount of iron, and small amounts of other minerals. One particular mixture of ores produces Spelter, an easily manipulated metal often used by tinkers for repairs and in the manufacture of small, low quality, items. The mine occasionally produces blue/green coloured Gemstones, such as azurite, malachite and turquoise.

Ores are brought to the surface, pounded with hammers, then heated to high temperatures in the smelters, before being poured into ingot shaped moulds. Some is worked locally, into weapons and tools, although the majority of the Copper is sent to the mint in Stilan, for the use in coin production. Spelter, and small amounts of the other metals, are shipped to Westland for resale.

A few mine guards keep watch over the entrance to the mine and metal work buildings. However, they mainly function as security guards, rather than anything more active. Well known in the town, the Mine Guards are likely to be found chatting to the workers, and reminding people of the rules, rather than enforcing any laws. They wear light armour, with the tabard of the White Company, and carry war hammers rather than anything more substantial.

The Small Farms

The farms pay a small tax (often in the form of labour) and a small ground rent (Often in the form of produce) to the governor. They are responsible for their own buildings, stock and crops. Their leases are heritable, and can be passed down through the generations, so it is almost as good as owning land.

Others

A few huts are scattered around, most with a small vegetable garden. The residents make their living doing casual work, foraging and hunting small game.
