This section gives a brief overview of ships that you might find in The Shackles and Fever Sea. It is an eclectic mix of vessels from around the world. Resale values are for an undamaged ship, that isn't regarded as stolen in the port of sale. Naval vessels are more heavily armed than civilian vessels.
The image, on the right, gives you some idea of vessel sizes. The smallest is a Keel Boat (small), then Junk (Medium), Ship (standard) and Man-o-War (Large).
Sailing Ships (all sail at speed 90 or 100 for some naval vessels) However, you rely on the wind for propulsion and speed. You don't go at full speed in alight wind, and if you are becalmed, you have a maximum speed of 5 - as you are towed along by your ship's boats.
Cutters (1 Mast) - resale value 4000gp - Gaff rigged medium-sized ship with a small cargo hold. Often used by navies and smugglers.
Brigs (2 Masts) - resale Value 4500gp - Medium-sized, general purpose vessel with a medium cargo hold.
Ships (3 Masts) - resale value 5000gp - The classic sailing ship of the golden age of sail. General purpose vessel, with a large cargo hold.
Man-o-War (4 masts) - resale value 15000gp - A large ship, very heavily armed, with a medium cargo hold. You need a fleet to take one.
Junks (Eastern) - resale value 7500gp - Medium-sized eastern vessel with a medium cargo hold. A general purpose vessel that only needs 10 crew.
Coasters - Top speed 60. Medium-sized merchant ships, characterised by a single mast with a square sail. Like other ships that rely on sails, their speed depends on wind strength. Easy meat for pirates, but rarely has good plunder.
Keel Boats - Top speed 60. Small vessels used by fisher folk and local traders in coastal waters - they sail slowly. However, many have oars or sweeps that will allow them to move, even when they are becalmed. Easy meat for pirates, but rarely has good plunder.
