The Green Faith

The Green is a pragmatic mixture of philosophy and faith that appears to crossover with many of the other established religions, and a numer of traditional deities are seen as compatible with the belief system described below.

Followers believe that the structure of the earth, sky, sun, sea, moon etc are all part of one mega-pantheon – but so big and so powerful that they don’t respond to us humans directly. That believe that the ‘great deities’ are elemental deities, so large and with hugely slow thought processes that we hardly register at all.

Plants, animals, rivers, streams, winds and seasons are all part of ‘them’, in the same way as hair, fingernails, belching, blood, sweat and tears are all part of us. Nature IS part of that pantheon, but an indirect part – even we are an indirect part of that pantheon, in the same way as the birds, bees and fishes. If a hunter takes a couple of rabbits for dinner, it is a bit like trimming a fingernail - it isn’t really noticeable and it doesn’t really change anything. However, digging up a whole rabbit warren and destroying it completely might be the equivalent of ripping a nail off – painful, noticeable and irritating. Killing all the rabbits in the world, might be equivalent to us losing a finger – a much more significant injury. The more serious the damage to ‘Nature’, the more significant it is.

Nature Spirits are there to help and guide us – or punish us when ‘misbehave’. Assana, Yashsa, Loa, Ras, Sprite and Kami are all names used for Nature Spirits in different languages, and there are many more as well - different people often us different names – even when they are speaking common.

Many Green followers believe that there are two types Nature Spirits: Natural Personifications are when a waterfall or forest develops its own persona; Druidic Spirts, created when high-level druid merges themselves with an area of land, forest, river or breeze. More sophisticated followers tend to believe that all nature spirits were originally powerful (Mythic) mortals who dedicated their immortal life to an aspect of nature that they were close to. Some of those might be nearly as old as the world itself, and could have a very different, perhaps more feral, outlook to those who underwent the transformation more recently. However, in practice, they treat all Nature Spirits equally - Respect them, and they won’t hurt you, and may even help out occasionally. Many Druids, Oracles, Rangers and Witches are believed to draw their powers from these philosophical beliefs. Some examples of Great Nature Spirits include Jack Butterfly (of Galinia), Ofloa the Crocodile (of River Skasa), The Haras (of Koke Caverns) and Yashat (of Kormir Mountain)

Most Green followers also believe that some of these spirits can grow in power, and eventually become deities in their own right - examples are: Maruma (Church of Hann); Mawida, Rusina & Maria (Old Lords); and Rista from the Sakar pantheon. These deities are often offered prayers and respect by green followers, even when they aren’t devotees of the overall pantheon / church.

Note: There are many representations of nature spirits in the Bestiary. Some examples include

  • Dryad
  • Hamadryad
  • Woodwose
  • Twigjacks
  • Tunche
  • Nornes
  • Nymphs
  • Nereids
  • Fossegrim

And there are others - this is the result of a quick trawl of the Fey section of the Bestiary. The most powerful might have even have Mythic Tiers
