This is an old revision of the document!

Sakar

Sakar lies of the southern shores of the Hann Sea. It is a disorganised land with very different philosophies from the Hann. Most of the land is barren, rocky, mountainous and broken scrublands - where pockets of 'civilisation' have developed around rivers, wetlands, waterholes and oases. The people consist of …

Regional Culture

There is a small regional Pantheon of deities that are recognised and worshiped (occasionally) by most people in Sakar. More many people they are occasional gods who give a cultural background to their lives. Then the more localised gods are responsible for the local interpretation and culture.

  • There are only a few gods (mainly neutral) that are worshipped over the whole region.
    • A TN deity that puts family above everything and who recognises slavery.
    • Takri, Freebird
    • Some sort of Green faith with an emphasis on Water, and sun.

The whole region believes that Slavery id legal, and that responsibility to family (even if it is the family that owns you) is important. However, it also recognises the adventuring spirit and the desire for independence - but within the family and slave owning structure. As an area with poor land and a 'difficult' supply of fresh water, local nature spirits are to be respected.

Coastal Towns

Some might be big enough to claim city status, but each town is built at the mouth of a river. Crops grow due to cleverly managed irrigation. They are ruler by hereditary Priest-Kings, whose ancestors are buried in great pyramidal tombs in the town. The 'Head Ancestor' is seen as an undead hero-god, who must be appeased, who will rise to protect their city should it ever be threatened. Many believe that the living rulers are just puppets for their undead ancestors.

There is a respect for engineering (dams, irrigation systems, building from stone) (This needs a deity) and defensive warfare (another deity) all with an emphasis of maintaining and defending the city.

The Bad Lands

The badlands are made of broken scrubs, hills and plateaus - life here is based around waterholes, oasis and 'hidden' springs. It is home to semi-nomadic tribes and their flocks/herds. Favoured animals are goats, cows, camels and horses. Their herd and flocks are always on the move, although they have a 'home' base. They are very protective of their lands, but welcoming to other tribesmen. They are very wary of outsiders and often attack on sight - after all they could be pirates of slave traders. Think pre-islamic tribesmen.

The Core deities are respected, but the defensive combat deity and a herder deity are also prominent. (Needs new gods)

The Pirates

Spread along the coast, and even in the towns, are fleets of pirates. So long as they don't attack their local town, the Rulers don't take exception to it, so long as they don't attack the town. The towns buy things from the pirates, and even hold allow ship-sale markets for captured vessels. After all, the law in their town hasn't been broken. However, it makes the southern coast a dangerous place for shipping.

The core regional deities are important, and pirate clans' are seen as extended families that fall under the auspices of the Family God. Rather than Takri (freebird) the pirates favour Takri the Navigator. They are more concerned withh the sea and wind/weather nature spirits that any of the others. And then there is the Pirate deity (based on Besmara)

The Mountains

The mountain ranges are home to all sorts of barbarian and humanoid tribes - all squabbling with each other. Some are quite powerful and it is said that there is some sort of humanoid empire somewhere up on the high ground of the southern mountains.

The margins are also home to various bandits and outlaw groups, composed of excaped slaves, people who have been exiled from their cities or families - or just left, for one reason or another. Out here Takri (freebird) is important, as well as respect for the Nature Spirits - however, there is little time given to the concepts of Family or slavery. While land based, many of the philosopies iof the Pirate God can be found.
