Terrain, Galinia

This part of Galinia is a harsh country at the best of times, mountains, forests and wetlands border strips of hills and meadows that are suitable for farming. Further to the north and east, the land opens and is better suited to farming and agriculture.

While these brief descriptions include an overview of the types of creatures you might find, they are not complete. Be aware that these lands were once controlled by necromancers, and there are many pockets of undead, that can pose a major risk, in every type of terrain. There are rumours of deep burial crypts, still occupied by undead necromancers, where the rites of Wee Jas reign supreme.

The Coast is imposing, edged with cliffs and rock beaches, however there are headlands that create deep high-sided bays, many with narrow and rocky entrances. Between the cliffs lie wetlands that run all the way down to the sea. There are safe anchorages, and plenty of landing places, if you know where to look. Tass Dann, the main town, lies on an island in the middle of one bay, while Fremont, the farming village, occupies one of the headlands.

The Wetlands vary, most are salt marsh, although there are a few freshwater streams that flow through, and some tree covered swampy areas. Boggards, Grippli and Lizard folk villages are scattered across the wetlands, and the three groups are constantly skirmishing or clashing over the best hunting places. There are also boggarts, and other, more conventional, inhabitants that might decide that an explorer would make a good meal.

The Forests are dense, and the thick undergrowth makes them difficult to travel. However, there are natural paths and clearing - which may (of course) have been created by some of the larger monsters that inhabit them. Beetle and spiders, of many types, can be found here in great numbers, with giant and large specimens particularly abundant.

The Mountains aren’t as bad as they look, passes lead to quiet and verdant valleys, streams bubble along noisily. Herds of wild sheep and goats roam freely, although they are often fall prey to the mountain cats and trolls. They would make ideal places for small settlements, if it wasn’t for the orcs, ogres and bugbears, that already occupy them.

The Roads tend to stick to the broad stretches of open scrubland that wind between the mountains and the sea, characterised by low hills, light woodland and small streams, surrounded by scrub bushes. The roads to Citadel and Farfobik are relatively safe and are good for hunting with rabbits, game birds, small deer and wild boar, but very few large predators. However, you might find orc or bugbear raiding parties looking for loot or, perhaps, slaves. There are other, older and less used, roads marked on the map and those are travelled at your own risk.
