Delta Margin
Lined with mangrove forest, the Detla Margin is a hot and damp place, buzzing with insects and many other types of life.
Mangrove is not just one species, but a mixture of trees, bushes, ferns and reeds. Between them they provide edible fruit, seeds, roots and leaves – so long as you aren’t too fussy. One tree can even be tapped for a sugary sap that can be fermented. Others produce good firewood and building timbers. Ferns and reeds can be used for thatching – and reeds can be used to build simple boats.
While the Mangrove Forest has trees with their roots in the water, some parts of the estuary bank, and many of the inlets, are bordered by saltwater reeds. Other, often smaller, trees grow better when they are setback from the water’s edge, growing on small hillocks that are surrounded by swampy wetlands. The roots of many of the ‘in water’ trees provide safe places for small fish and amphibians – as well as being a good place for oysters to grow. Waterfowl nest in the reeds and ferns and various creatures (see Encounter Table) lurk among the trees, roots and water. All-in-all, it is a very productive and diverse setting – IF you know where to look, and have the right skills.
While there are a few village remains, most sights of the previous population have disappeared under the relentless growth of the jungle-like mangroves.
The Delta Margin Orcs use two types of vessel around the delta.
Double canoes are used for raids on humanoid 'villages'. Raids normally happen at around about dawn or dusk, and the orc squad power into the village, take what they can, and then power out again - often leaving a few seriously injured enemy and a couple of small fires behind. They head back home as quickly as they can. Many of the items taken in raids appear in local 'markets' some time after they have been taken.
Rafts are used for trade. A half-orc on a raft might head out to a humanoid village to trade, or even into one of the compounds on the outskirts of Stilton. Rafts, apparently held at anchor, just outside Orc territory, are often an invitation to trade.
