Ozgryn
A mining village, close to the coast, on the edge of a massive mountain range. The site was found by a group of Dwarf prospectors from Banaduum, supported by Treverii scouts. They were supported in their search by The Finaroka Navy, being dropped off and collected by The Broken Sabre as she completed patrols, then some of the development funding came through F.I.G.
Overview
Ozryn is a small mining settlements, the latest mainland developments initiated from Finaroka. However, it isn't seen (by the powers that be) to have a lot of potential, although it supplies much of the iron that the Finaroka / Croston colony needs. However, it is a solidly built village, with little access to wood. It is only about a quarter of a mile from the sea and a road leads directly to a small stone built jetty.
They will trade with anybody who comes along, peace bonded, with something to trade. You might meet a group of Orcs trading skins, leather or meat for iron spearheads, a stone giant who wants a very large cooking pot, or a Tengu looking for a couple of short swords. However, you might also find an FFTC cog, or a Dhow from Sakhara.
Set on the edge of the mountains, the land here is dry and not very fertile - there are some scrub bushes, but few streams and little in the way of edible plants for foraging. Game is liable to include the Desert Chicken , Goat, Lizard or perhaps Camel.
Exports include weapons and armour (some MW quality) as well as iron ingots, general household items, nails and other low value ironware. Imports include flour, ale, food, clothing etc.
The Village
It isn't much of a village, really. Just a few buildings set in a break in the cliffs, secure by a couple of simple watchtowers and a palisade gate. The watchtowers are also the stable and storage area for the village. The northern Tower houses a pair of mules that are used in the mine and to transport cargo to the jetty, while the southern tower acts as a general storage area. The population is mixed Dwarf and Human, with occasional members of other races.
There is a trading Post, Majestic Sun Trading, that is also a tavern. You can get simple food, ale, wine and most every-day items that cost up to 1gp, although there is a chance that they have a few more expensive items in stock. They are happy to let visitors sleep on the floor of the common room . It also serves as the village meeting hall, should the need arise.
The workshop contains a smelter and forge, which produces iron ingots for export, and well as metal items for use in the community. They also produce MW weapons and armour, most of which is sent for export, although they often have a few items in stock - waiting for the next trade vessel. Many
There are three 'communal' houses. One is occupied by Treverii Mountain Men who act as scouts, hunters and foragers for the community. The second is home to the dwarves, who oversee both the mine and the forges. The third acts as a tenement block for the workers who have come to the site, and generally work as labourers.
The Mine produces iron and some minor gemstones, and is the economic heart of the village. Labourers work under the supervision of dwarf miners, digging out the iron ore and transporting it to the smelter in the village square, where it is processed into ingots, before some of it is worked in the forge. Much of the profit from mining and forging, goes to pay off the FIG loan and, if the village manages to survive, the debts should be paid off in a few years. The gemstones are seen as a bonus, anyone (miner or labourer) gets a Finder's Fee reward of something like 30% of the sale vale of the stone , the rest goes straight towards paying off the FIG debt.
Local Inhabitants
The following humanoid groups all live in the area, vying for territory, food and resources. While the Orcs raid with malice - the humanoid tribes all clash occasionally, normally over territory, hunting and foraging grounds. However, Strix have a particular hatred of Humans, and deal with Wen and Neanderthals more harshly than other races.
None of these races have good technological skills and their weapons and armour all tend to be wood, stone or leather. However, Wen, Neanderthals and Strix will trade with Ozgryn for knives as well as spear and javelin blades. However, the Strix merchant goes out of his way to avoid any humans in the mine - often waiting on a large rock outside the mine settlement. The Orcs will do anything to get metal two-handed weapons, but Ozgryn refuses to trade with them.
Treat Wen, Neanderthal and Orc caves as Redoubts. Large groups will have a redoubt as the entrance to a cave system - that serve as Grottos for their members. Leaders of large groups might have a whole grotto to themselves!
- Wen (N) - Semi-nomadic, cave dwellers.
- Neanderthals (N) - cave dwellers who live in small Clans
