Towns and settlements of Berhof
HallBridges: Pop 2200 (Town)
The only large town in Berhof, the economic and social capital, and the only residential settlement to have an organised town guard. There are two inns (The Talisman and The Unicorn), the Curiosity Shop (which deals in charms, potions, minor magic and exotic goods), a temple to Pharasma, a Library, an Orphanage, a Brewery , Stables and a Merchant Store - as well as the minor businesses that make a town work.
Hallbridges is the nearest Berhof gets to a cosmopolitan area – While individuals might have strong philosophical views, people are generally tolerant and open minded, and everyone rubs along together. The temple of Pharasma (N; Births, Deaths, Circle of Life) manage the burial grounds and provide the main religious support for the town. However, you can probably find minor priests of most of the major religions in town.
Kusnir: Pop 450 (Town)
Set away from the main road, Kusnir is a small fishing and agricultural town led by a cleric of Erastil. There is an inn (called the Net and Shovel), an herbalist and a boat builder. Kusnir is a typical country town led by a Cleric of Erastil. Most people are followers of Erastil and tend to have traditional views, with families led by a male figurehead. Fishing and Pottery are common businesses, there are a few farms, with hunting and light forestry make up the supporting occupations. However, a number of followers from the Green Faith base themselves here as well.
Chiswell: Pop 160 (Village)
A rural village at the road junction connecting Hallbridges, Kusnir and Gannaway, Chiswell boasts a roadhouse, called The Red Fox, a small shrine to Desna, and a skilled smith who is able to make metal goods of the highest quality. The Smith, in particular, puts Chiswell on the map - he is a human cleric of Torag, able to make customized, Masterwork weapons and armour. Most other residents are farmers or herders.
Ganaway: Pop 120 (Village)
Ganaway is a quiet, rural community situated on the main road, overlooked by a small shell keep. It has a roadhouse, called The Merchant’s Cup, and a small shrine to Desna. However, most of the residents are Hunters, trappers or woodsmen. It is a small and fairly isolated community that depends on the trade caravans to bring goods in and out. Sir Seamus is the Laird of Gannaway and runs an Iomedian Chapel, called Old Keep, just outside the village.
Bramblewarren: Pop 25 (Thorpe)
The last stopping place in Behof before you hit the Aldweg Pass – and, conversely, the first stop once you are out of the mountains. There is little here, except the warden’s Compound. Long recognised as a stopping place for caravans coming over the Alderweg pass, it has been developed with a palisade to serve as the base for Fern Moonshadow, the Warden of the East The warden and her garrison live in a small wooden blockhouse. One of the nearby trees has a large butterfly carved on it and serves as a shrine to Desna.
There is room inside the palisade for caravans and travellers to camp, and the garrison’s commissary sells hot food, ale and other small items to the travellers. There are often a couple of hunters or trappers camping here.
Lurnslye: Pop 180 (Village)
Near the northern pass, Lurnslye is an isolationist village run by the temple of Imbrex - they do not welcome visitors. However, the village is well known for growing raspberries and the tonic wines it makes and exports.
Tower of the Heavens: Pop 100
Petitioners visit this Large Monastery, dedicated to Irori, from far and wide to get prophetic readings from the tower, although it is said that the more you pay, the more accurate the reading. They are also renowned students of astronomical matters. However, it is very difficult to get into the tower itself, and most people get no further than the visitors hostel. Abbot Shaffley, a member of the Berhof Council, is head of the monastery.
Castle Berhof: Pop:75
Castle Berhof is little more than a large, old fashioned, keep guarding the south-western pass. It was once the home of the Barons of Berhof - but now is the seat of the Lord-Governor, Sir Abel Brawden. Most of the residents are soldiers, employees or servants - their families live in a few cottages clustered outside.
Fanjyr Station: Pop 30
Part of the Governor’s command, this walled enclosure controlling the Northern pass. There is a roadhouse, called The Blue Flagon, a Farrier and a shrine dedicated to Desna. It guards the pass to the Mountain Spine and collects tolls and taxes.
