Hobgoblins

This section combines texts from various sources to give a more detailed view of Hobgoblins and their life. Most hobgoblins live in small independent groups, however, on Drai Shon's main island they have become organised into a massive and powerful empire.

Overview

It is well known that hobgoblins mistrust and even despise magic, particularly arcane magic. Their shamans are treated with a mix of fear and respect, and are usually forced to live alone on the fringes of the tribe’s lair. It is all but unheard of to find a hobgoblin practicing arcane magic, or as hobgoblins call it, “elf magic.” This is the root of their hatred of magic—the hobgoblins’ hatred of elves.

Hobgoblins are militaristic and fecund, a combination that makes them quite dangerous in some regions. They breed quickly, replacing fallen members with new soldiers and keeping up their numbers despite the fortunes of war. They generally need little reason to declare war, but more often than not that reason is to capture new slaves—life as a slave in a hobgoblin lair is brutal and short, and new slaves are always needed to replace those who fall or are eaten.

Physical Description

Burly and muscled, hobgoblins stand a few inches shorter than the average human, and their long arms, thick torsos, and relatively short legs give them an almost apelike stature. Hobgoblins’ skin is a sickly gray-green that darkens to mossy green after long exposure to the sun. Their eyes burn fiery orange or red, and their broad faces and sharply pointed ears give their features a somewhat feline cast. Hobgoblins lack facial hair, and even hobgoblin women are bald. Except for their size, hobgoblins bear a strong physical resemblance to their goblin cousins.

Culture

Hobgoblin culture reflects their militaristic nature, and Hobgoblins live in militaristic tyrannies, each community under the absolute rule of a hobgoblin general. In most regions, these small tyrannies vie with each other for supremacy, and Hobgoblins aren't a major threat to the civilised world. However, on Drai Shon's Big Island, these small, squabbling holdings have been welded together into one great Imperial Tyranny that dominates their Island, and threaten the smaller islands.
