Administrative Titles

These are the people appointed to represent a Lord's authority in an area. They act as their Lord's Representative, oversee the local watchmen and military, keep the peace, enforce the law and make sure taxes are collected. If you are a Lord who controls more that two or more separate estates you will need to appoint administrators to help you look after them (You can only be the management figure for one at a time). Your administrator may well be an officer in your military or hold other titles as well. These are not hereditary titles. They are role titles and the incumbent holds the title and prestige while they do the job. Often that is for life, but if they don’t please their master the title can be given to someone else.

  • Viscount - Viscount is used in its original sense of an assistant to the Count – although they can be appointed by any peer. It is normally a senior Baron or Lord who administers a region and acts as an intermediary between the Peer and the rest of the nobles.
  • Governor – In this sense it is used for the administrator of a province or region that does not have a Noble hierarchy to run it. It is a good position to use for a new colony or for a region that isn’t well developed.
  • Lord Mayor – The Mayor of a City. This may be an elected position, or it might be appointed by the local Lord. Or the Lord might assume mayoral duties themselves.
  • Lord Advisor – one of the formal advisors to a Lord Mayor, Governor or equivalent leader.
  • Mayor – The Mayor of a Town. This may be an elected position, or it might be appointed by the local Lord. Or the Lord might assume mayoral duties themselves.
  • Adviser – one of the formal advisers to a Town Mayor or equivalent leader.
  • Headman – leader of a Village, Hamlet or Thorpe.

There are many other possible names for these positions, but (for me) these cover the basic roles. Adviser (for example) is very generic, but it is the general position that is important - in these rules a Steward is about equivalent to a Senior Magistrate or a City Treasurer. Flavour them to suit your game.
