This is an old revision of the document!

Finaroka

This was built as a setting for a colonisation game with a sideline in pirating, that never happened. A core map, a couple of settlements and a few tribal/humanoid enemies. That never got off of the ground, and then I got the idea for Drai Shon. This just needs a slight rework and a lot of tidying up. Based on elements of the colonisation of The Canary Islands, and the Americas, with a bit of the golden age of Piracy thrown in. Finaroka has (approximately) in the same position and environment as one of the Canary Islands, although a bit closer to the coast.

The part of the game setting is built around the colonized islands of Finaroka and two small mainland settlement. It is suitable for an exploration based game, up and around the Mulcoft delta. It was originally intended for a colonization/pirate game, but I decided I could make that work better in a different setting.

As yet, no explorations or adventures have been planned for the area - BUT it is ready for future use.

Regional Overview

A developing region with three significant settlements, although none of them are very big. Originally it was a commercial enterprise, led by merchants and nobles with younger sons, now it has been taken over by the Briganda-Shay family as a longer term project - and rumour has it, they have an ulterior motive for their involvement.

Politics - A brief overview of the powerbrokers across the region - including who has a say, and where.

Finaroka is an offshore island group, barely colonized, with one large town, that serves as the region's capital and trade hub. Its development has been helped by the discovery of Drai Shon and the small amount of trade that comes from the other colonies and their supporters. As the regional trade centre, they deal with vessels from Hann and Sakar, although the vast majority of their trade comes from Hann. A few of the islands have been settled for farming and agricultural although none of the islands (including Finaroka) have been properly cleared, and there are other islands that have not yet been touched. DM Note

Croston, in the first mainland settlement, set in the delta of the Mulcroft river. They trade with the humanoid tribes of the delta, and deal with raids by local swamp Orcs, the more distant Fjord Orcs, and occasional pirates. Claimed by an adventuring group associated with Finaroka Company investors, Croston considers itself to be a semi-independent colony under the aegis of the Governor of Finaroka.

Ozryn, is barely developed, just a curtain wall with a few buildings inside, but it is a mining town, and exports both metals and minor gems - however, it imports almost everything else, and is in a fairly precarious position. It will trade with anyone, including interior tribals/humanoids. Think Wild West Gold Rush (on a smaller, and less wealthy, scale). However, it looks to the Governor of Finaroka for leadership protection and supplies. However, while the leaders will say otherwise in public, the Governor's Writ doesn't always take precedence here.

Piracy can also be a problem. Traditional pirates, Sakaran raiders and privateers have taken to raiding shipping around The Razardi Islands, and sometimes venture down as far as Finaroka. There is probably a pirate base, somewhere in the region, that services all of them. Then there are Fjord Orcs, settled in small coves and fjords along the coast, havea history of raiding each other using large canoes - now, they have new targets …

Finaroka and its Islands

The whole island chain is claimed by The Finaroka Company. It is a small chain of volcanic island (which may still have the occasional eruption) - most of the islands have a central peak, with forested slopes, and a very fertile coastal area. The weather is warm to hot, and rains on the mountain run down to give an almost continuous growing season, some plants can be harvested year round, many others have two growing seasons per year. However, it is patchy, and the fertile coastal areas interspersed with barren stretches, often made of volcanic rock. While many of those have 'bad land' plants growing on them, they provide a cheap source of building material - although there are still the normal 'bad land' denizens and hazards to deal with.

Upland mountain slopes are home to various humanoid tribes, most of which are hostile, and who almost anything might make their home on the peaks? The undeveloped coastal areas are home to secretive Wen tribes, kobolds and golblins.

Main Island

  • Main Island - The largest Island of the Finaroka Archipelago, there are a couple of settlements on Main Island, but much of the island is still undeveloped.

Croston

Wider Area

Ozryn

Make this a joint Dwarf / Clan Treverii holding. At least those are the primary resident groups, although there are other races / people there. Probably about 1/3 dwarf, 1/3 Treverii and 1/3 other. Include a few Wen and, perhaps, a few humanoids.

Ozryn is a small mining settlements, the latest mainland developments initiated from Finaroka. However, it isn't seen (by the powers that be) to have a lot of potential, although it supplies much of the iron that the Finaroka / Croston colony needs. However, it is a solidly built village, with little access to wood. It is only about a quarter of a mile from the sea and a road leads directly to a small stone built jetty.

The mine produces iron as well as a few agates, blue quartz and hematite. Exports include weapons and armour (normal quality) as well as iron ingots, general household items, nails and other low value ironware.

Imports include flour, ale, food, clothing etc.

The town will trade with anybody who comes along, peace bonded, with something to trade. You might meet a group of Orcs trading skins, leather and meat for iron spearheads, a stone giant who wants a very large cooking pot, or a Tengu looking for a couple of short swords. However, you might also find an FFTC cog, or a Dhow from Sakhara.

Background material

  • Overview - a simple DM level overview.
  • The History as told by recruiting agents all around the Hann Empire.
  • Background material - a number of different pages that were written when this area was meant as a pirating/colonization game. Some of the material will still be useful - some will need tailoring to any new campaign.
