Orcish Vessels

The following vessels are used by the Orc bands in the Mulholland Delta area.

Raft - A standard 10×10 raft, powered by oars or paddles. They are used on the delta as trade vessels. If you see an Orc (or 1/2orc) on a raft, they are interested in trade, or perhaps fishing, rather than fighting. Normal trade missions, consist of a 1/2orc accompanied by an Orc.

Dugout Canoe - Old Fashioned dugout canoe, with an outrigger and the same stats as a Rowboat. It is used for close coastal work, including laying fishing nets and gathering seaweed. It is also used for training boys to paddle or command vessels - dugout crews can be the basis of gangs and sergeants … Especially if they win races.

Outrigger Canoe - A large outrigger canoe with a crabclaw sail, and up to sixteen paddlers. This ‘squad’ sized vessel is used for minor inshore piracy, and the occasional small raid (both along the coast and in the delta). The Orcs are mainly interested in metals (including weapons and armour), booze of any sort, food and anything else that looks expensive. Each individual raider loads up their pockets and bags with as much personal loot as they can get their hands on, and then chuck everything else into the canoe - without worrying whether it will be spoiled by exposure to the seawater. However, with a full squad of orc raiders aboard, they can’t really get away with much plunder. Orc Pirac, and squad raids, are just slash and grab raids, with a bit of mayhem and violence thrown in for good measure. Structural damage, on buildings or vessels, is light - although the orcs tend to start fires to cover their retreat.

NOTE: A canoe, with a crew of four, can be used as a fishing boat in coastal waters, wetlands, rivers and deltas. However, it is paddled rather than rowed.

War Canoe - A large canoe with an outriggger and crabclaw sail, about the size of a longship. It is about sixty feet long and nearly fifteen feet wide, counting the outriggers. A war Canoe can hold up to 100 Orcs, and they can, in short bursts, achieve a speed of 90 - but only when there are pplenty of paddlers and the wind is in the right direction.

War Canoes are a real rarity, and are more of a prestige item, rather than anything that is in regular use. They are so large, and need such a large crew, that that only the most powerful can afford to use them. They rarely come out of harbour unless a whole war-band is going to battle.

Note: War Canoes cannot be converted to other uses. They are little more than a fighting platform for a small army of melee troops. They have next to no cargo space and need a lot of maintenance.
