The Tannery League

The Tannery States are ruled by the Tannery Council from The Tannery. The Tannery is at the heart of the alliance that binds the states together. The original agreements were signed on a small island, used as a tannery, situated at the confluence of two rivers and precisely at the point that the three largest states met. The Rulers of Serise, Krote and Momir came together and agreed the first of the agreements that would eventually lead to economic and mutual security agreements between the three states, that grew into a full-blown union when the other local states joined.

The city that grew up around the Tannery is the primary settlement on the whole Telida Peninsula, and is the largest city in the region. However, it is formed of four wards, ruled by different people. The rulers of Serise, Krote and Momir, technically, rule their ‘quarter’ while the Lord Tannery (The high priest of Abadar) rules the smallest central island ward. The Dukes (who are the highest ranking nobles in the region) have permanent seats, two other members are elected from the lesser nobles. The Lord Tannery is chair of the council, he has limited personal income (from his area of the city) but can raise money through taxes and tithes - but which need council approval.

The Temples of Abadar, Pharasma and Iomedae are based in Tannery Ward. Abadar’s faithful manage the city on behalf of the council, and the Arch-Banker, always takes the role of Tannery Lord and Chair of the Tannery Council. The Temple of Pharasma oversees the noble catacombs and the temple of Iomedae trains the city guard. Datsyn’s College, in Serise Ward, is a Universalist Wizard’s College, offering training in the Arcane Arts. Many of the Lords Serise are alumni of its hallowed halls, and it is favoured by that house.

To maintain balance among the Noble Wards, a guild system operates to control crafting and professional work. It ensures that no state gets an advantage by undercutting its partners.

Abadar, Erastil & Pharasma are the main deities of the Tannery League however, Iomedae and the Green Faith both have regular followings.

  • Serise - Led by Imperial Duke Rodney III, Serise controls a large section of the main city, that includes the city's Magic University. Many members of house Serise study at the university, and the current lord is an accomplished mage. Beyond the city, the duchy is based on market towns and a rural village economy. There is always some concern about House Serise, as their magic university had a short period when it specialized in demon and devil summoning. The arrival of Iomedae's Mission, put a stop to that - but fear lingers in the memory.
  • Krote Led by Imperial Duke Stanley, the House of Krote rule their holdings from a small palace in their city, but are generally seen as more 'rough and ready' than their counterparts, with some of their number training as Rangers. Away from the city, Krote is primarily an agricultural state with good land for both crops farming and animal husbandry. However, the families original holdings were in one of the state's wetlands, and family legend has it that, in the early days, the family holdings were saved from attack when the invaders disturbed the toads, and the great croaking woke the families defenders. The family motto is ‘Die Kroten Sind Unsere Starke’ (‘The Toads Are Our Strength’). The Duke of Krote holds the secondary title of Baron Berhof. Berhof is a small mountain state that is not a part of the Tannery League. The female heir of Berhof married into House Krote, and it has been part of the family collection ever since.
  • Momir Led by Imperial Duchess Daphne, Momir is the smallest duchy and, perhaps, the least interesting. It doesn't have any special history, just a hard-working Royal family who manage their holdings well.

The lesser estates of The Tannery League are scattered around the edges of the royal estates that belong to the dukes. The lords of Far March and Rilltops currently represent their peers in the Tannery Council. These lesser estates are all based around a town (often a large town) with satellite villages and the occasional market town. Most make their money by sheep farming in the local hills, then spinning and weaving in the town. The best quality Tannery Hinterland wool is very well regarded, both nationally and internationally.

Achehold, Pretipark and Far March, are primarily human settlements, but have more half-elves than may other rural areas. Some have been adopted at birth from Elven Mothers, who wanted to find a home for an unwanted child.

  • Dinasgate (at the end of the Berhof pass, hilly, bordering the mountains)
  • Achehold (NW corner – bordering the sea and the Holdren forest. Higher than normal percentage of 1/2 elves)
  • Pretipark(North corner – bordering the Holdren forest. Higher than normal percentage of 1/2 elves)
  • Far March (NE Corner, hilly, bordering the mountains and the Holdren forest. Higher than normal percentage of 1/2 elves)
  • Hawkmoor (South, hilly, bordering the mountains)
  • Baxey Tors (South, hilly, bordering the mountains)
  • Peningdon Moors - (East, hilly, bordering the mountains)
  • Rilltops (East, hilly, bordering the mountains)
