“The People of the Land of Fate speak a common tongue known as Midani, although there are a number of regional language. It is a complex language that uses a different script to ours and, to the untrained eye, the writing looks like a series of senseless lines and squiggles drawn by a child’s hand. That isn’t true, of course, it is a well-defined, ancient, and precise system of writing, capable of expressing their language in full. The language itself is complex, nuanced and capable of expressing both abstract and concrete concepts with clarity. It is said to be a beautiful language and ideal for writing poetry, although I must admit that I do not have the linguistic skills to appreciate the finer points of the tongue.

However, many of the ancient racial languages are preserved, although these are rarely spoken outside the family home, and few humans have more than a smattering of any of them. On my recent visit, I was fortunate enough to find a halfling guide, who acted as my interpreter in most things. While we both spoke the same language, after a fashion, we each spoke it in different ways. Tone and inflections were different, some words had different shades of meaning and we each used words that the other was unfamiliar with. It worked out well enough, but it wasn’t always easy.

However, with some perseverance, a good interpreter, and some luck, you can communicate well enough.”
