The Geography of Sakar

Overview

Sakar is a dry land, set between the mountains and the Hann Sea. Its main towns and cities are spread along the coastal plains, normally where a river meets the sea, where the land is greener and more suitable for agriculture. Further south, the Bad Lands, with its rocky scrubland and desert, is home to semi-nomadic family-based tribes. Even further south, the Bad lands give way to high mountains, hope to bandits, barbarians and monsters.

Coastal Towns

Some are big enough to claim city status, but towns are often found where a river meets the sea. Crops grow here due to cleverly managed irrigation, while each town develops its own industrial specializations. They are ruled jointly by an Amir, a Qadi and a hereditary Priest-King, whose ancestors are buried in great pyramidal tombs in the town. There is a respect for engineering (dams, irrigation systems, building from stone) and defensive warfare - all with an emphasis on maintaining and defending the city.

The enlightened deities are properly respected, but Wee Jas (patron of the priest Kings), Azan, Besmara and Takri have a strong influence as well. The 'Senior Ancestor' of the Priest-Kings, often the founder of the city, is seen as a local hero-god who will rise to protect their city should it ever be threatened.

The Pirates

Spread along the coast, especially at each end of the Sakhar Coast, are fleets of pirates. So long as they don't attack local towns, the city rulers don't take exception to their activities - after all, the law in their town hasn't been broken. The towns buy things from the pirates, and even hold allow the sale markets of vessels. However, it makes the Sakhar Coast a dangerous place for foreign shipping.

The enlightened deities are important, while Takri the Navigator and the pirate deity, Besmara are also important.

The Bad Lands

The badlands are made of broken scrubs, hills, desert and plateaus - life here is based around waterholes, oasis and 'hidden' springs. It is home to semi-nomadic, family-based, tribes and their flocks/herds. Favoured animals are goats, cows, camels and horses. Their herd and flocks are always on the move, although the tribe have a 'home' base at an oasis or spring. The tribesmen are protective of their lands, welcoming to other tribesmen, but wary of outsiders who could be pirates or slave traders.

The enlightened gods are respected, while Khepri and Najm are also favoured.

The Mountains

The mountain ranges are home to all sorts of barbarian and humanoid tribes - all squabbling with each other. Some are quite powerful, and it is said that there is a hobgoblin empire somewhere up on the high ground of the southern mountains.

The margins, between the Bad lands and the mountains, are home to various bandits and outlaw groups, composed of escaped slaves, people who have been exiled from their cities or families - or just left, for one reason or another.

Of the Enlightened gods, Haku is favoured, but Takri (freebird) is important, as well as respect for the Nature Spirits.
