House Rules

A collection of rules that will be implemented for any games that I run in the future - including the colonization game.

Languages

At creation, most races are restricted (by the rules) to the Bonus Languages that they can learn, Humans and Half Elves are not restricted - However, players must give a reason, in their backstory, why their character came in contact with a particular language. It might be as simple as 'I had a half-orc friend at school' - although less common languages will need a better explanation. The same sort of rules apply for languages learned through the Linguistics - a suitable down time post must be made, explaining how the character came in contact with the language.

Common Languages

  • Every area has common languages, and if you grow up in that area you can make a 'I had a half-orc friend at school' type explanation for Bonus languages.
  • If you learn the language through the Linguistics skill, there are two possible ways to learn it.
  • If you are regularly travelling with someone who speaks a language, you can learn it from them, and no Downtime post is required.
  • If, however, you want to learn a completely new language, you need to find someone to teach you the basics - in game terms, this means a downtime post describing (at the very least) who you learned it from. You need to liaise with the GM before you make the post, to make sure that the language is available and to get the right background for your teacher.
  • -
  • Common Languages are those that are spoken, by a reasonable number of people, in the area. So any language native to a significant portion of the population - and the languages of any (at least semi-civilised) monsters in the area.
  • In the colonization game you can expect to find Orc, Goblin, Draconic (Kobold) and a couple of other languages available to learn from trappers and scouts.

Uncommon Languages

These comprise the other languages that are available, somewhere, in the parts of the setting you visit. They need a decent downtime post to learn, and may require the completion of a small task or a payment for the time spent. This could include …

  • Languages from other Humanoid Races
  • Modern human languages from other parts of the world
  • Ancient languages might be spoken by some priests, mages, sages, archaeologists and explorers.
  • Extra-Planer languages might be spoken by some priests or mages.

Esoteric Languages

The covers just about everything else, and you will need to seek out a teacher to help you get started. This will include a number of downtime or RP posts as you go about finding a teacher and spending time with them.
