Defence Points

Aim - To tie defence points to a player skill, and expand the importance of defence within the Stewardship Committee.

Settlement/Holding

  • Add Marshal as a major officer in the settlement council. Might need to review the stewardship management threshold for controlling Consumption.
  • Maintain the rule that Def must be the lowest of the four size related stats.
  • A holding can only have a number of Def Points ≤ the Marshal's Prof:Soldier Skill (Need to think about lower limits - Level 3 prof:Soldier -5?) The Marshal oversees the troops (in the same way as the other Council Members oversee their areas. This is not an active role, in that PCs don't do the day to day management (they still have sergeants and officers for that).
  • Maybe extend this to cover all the Adventuring Company's holdings?

Personal

Still need to let PCs have their own House Guards. Need to review the definition of House Guards and what they protect. See Below

Troop Types

  • Soldiers are used to fight enemies in the field - this might be wars, policing actions or just clearing (or defending) a hex. While they can be deployed for guard duty, they can also be deployed in the field. Description and costs vary according to their arms and equipment.
    • Infantry - Experienced infantry troops (Warrior3) wear Banded Mail, Heavy Wooden Shield, Longsword and Javelins. Recruits (Warrior1) wear Scale Mail but carry the same weapons.
    • Archers - Experienced Archers (Warrior3) wear Scale Mail, with a Long Bow, Buckler and Long Sword. Recruits are L1 warriors with the same equipment, except they carry a short bow.
    • Skirmishers - All experienced soldiers (Warrior3) with leather Armour, Buckler, Short Bow and hand Axe. Often used to patrol the countryside around a settlement, and can provide defensive missile support, if required.
    • Cavalry - All experienced soldiers (Warrior3) with breastplate armor, a longsword, a lance, and a heavy steel shield and riding a combat-trained light horse. Cavalry archers also carry a short bow, but they are more expensive to hire.
  • Guards - trained warriors who are employed to guard a settlement or a building. They do not fight enemies unless their base is under attack.
    • Civic Guard - Patrol the settlement, keep order and defend it from attack. L3 Warriors who do not leave the settlement to fight enemies, but do their best to ensure that their settlement is well protected. Civic guards are all trained to use ballistae or other siege engines..
    • House Guards - personal guards to defend house and family etc. (L1 warriors) - DO NOT count as Def Points for settlements. Might be deployed to town walls in times of need. Need to work out Def Point value.
  • Mercenaries - Never count towards settlement Def Points - unless they are hired. Need to work out a price for them. Caravan Guards, personal guards, house guards = L1. Others - L3 warriors.
