 His parents were escaped slaves from Cheliax, who stole a boat and headed out to sea.  They made a living small scale trading, until something went wrong.  Jack isn’t quite sure what happened, but he was left to fend for himself and grew up along the dockside, scrounging a living, until he was big enough to go to sea, as a cabin boy.
